Launch of ITAKA: EU Project to Support the Use of Sustainable Biofuels in Aviation

ITAKA (Initiative Towards sustAinable Kerosene for Aviation) will look at removing the barriers to the use of sustainable biofuels in aviation.

ITAKA is an EU initiative under Seventh Framework Programme aiming to contribute to the European Commission’s ‘Biofuel Flight Path Initiative’ annual production target of two million tonnes of biofuel for aviation by 2020.

A consortium of leading aerospace and fuel companies has launched ITAKA, an initiative to produce sustainable biofuels for use in aviation. The project will contribute to the EU Advanced Biofuels Flight Path programme, which aims to speed up the commercialisation of aviation biofuels in Europe.

Funded by the EU FP7 Programme, ITAKA consists of collaborative project, aimed to produce sustainable renewable aviation fuel and to test its use in existing logistic systems and in normal flight operations in Europe. The project will also link supply and demand by establishing relationships among feedstock growers and producers, biofuel producers, distributors, and airlines. 

As feedstock, ITAKA targets European camelina oil and used cooking oil, in order to meet a minimum of 60% on greenhouse gas emission saving compared to the fossil jetA1. The project aims to certify the entire supply chain of the renewable aviation fuel, based on the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels (RSB) EU RED standard. In addition, the production and use of camelina as a biofuel feedstock will also be assessed with regards to its contribution to food and feed markets and its potential impact on direct and Indirect Land Use Change (ILUC). The research will also evaluate the economic, social and regulatory implications of the large-scale biofuels utilisation in aviation. 

Consortium members include companies and research centres leaders in: feedstock production (BIOTEHGEN and Camelina Company España); renewable fuel production (Neste Oil and RE-CORD); fuel logistics (CLH and SkyNRG); air transport (Airbus, EADS IW UK, Embraer and SENASA); and sustainability assessment (EADS IW France, EPFL and MMU).

Lanzamiento de ITAKA: Proyecto Europeo para el uso de los biocombustibles sostenibles en aviación

ITAKA (Initiative Towards sustAinable Kerosene for Aviation) investigará cómo eliminar las barreras al uso de biocombustibles sostenibles de aviación.

ITAKA es un proyecto del Séptimo Programa Marco de la UE, con el objetivo de contribuir al objetivo anual de producción de 2 millones de toneladas de biocombustibles para aviación en 2020 fijado por la Comisión Europea en su iniciativa “Biofuel Flight Path”.

Un consorcio de empresas líderes en los sectores aeroespacial y de los combustibles ha lanzado ITAKA, una iniciativa para la producción de biocombustibles sostenibles para su uso en aviación. El proyecto contribuirá el programa de biocombustibles avanzados “Advanced Biofuels Flight Path”, que busca acelerar la comercialización de biocombustibles de aviación en Europa.

Financiado por el 7º Programa Marco de la UE, ITAKA es un proyecto colaborativo que tiene como objetivo el producir combustible de aviación sostenible y renovable y probar dicho combustible en los sistemas logísticos existentes y en operaciones de vuelo convencionales en Europa. El proyecto además enlazará la oferta y demanda mediante el establecimiento de relaciones entre proveedores de materias primas, productores del biocombustible, distribuidores y aerolíneas.

Como materia prima, ITAKA se centra en aceite de camelina europea y aceite de cocina usado, de cara a conseguir un mínimo de un 60% de ahorro en las emisiones de gases efecto invernadero en comparación con el jetA1 de origen fósil. El proyecto tiene el objetivo de certificar toda la cadena de producción del combustible renovable de aviación, basándose en el estándar RSB EU RED (Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels). De forma adicional, se analizarán la producción y uso de camelina como materia prima para biocombustible con respecto a su contribución a los mercados de alimentación humana y animal y su potencial impacto en el cambio de uso del suelo indirecto (ILUC). La investigación también evaluará las implicaciones económicas, sociales y regulatorias del uso a gran escala de biocombustibles de aviación.

El consorcio está formado por empresas y centros de investigación líderes en: producción de materias primas para biocombustibles (BIOTEHGEN y Camelina Company España); producción de combustibles renovables (Neste Oil y RE-CORD); logística de hidrocarburos (CLH and SkyNRG); transporte aéreo (Airbus, EADS IW UK, Embraer y SENASA); e investigación sobre sostenibilidad (EADS IW France, EPFL y MMU).
