The beginning of 2021 marked the 30th anniversary of the constitution of SENASA, a milestone that the company commemorates by reinforcing its commitment to safety, training and sustainability in aviation. It has been three decades in which its range of activities has grown from examinations and specialized training to the provision of high-value services for aeronautical authorities and companies in the sector. With this, it has evolved to become a national and international benchmark in the civil aviation sector, with a leading role in the changes and advances that mark the present and future of the industry, such as the increase in safety and security levels, unmanned aircraft systems and the use of biofuels.
By virtue of Royal Decree 1649/1990, of December 20, the National School of Aeronautics (ENA) was transformed into the then-called Sociedad Estatal de Enseñanzas Aeronáuticas Civiles, S.A. (SENASA). Its first function (as a collaborating entity of the General Directorate of Civil Aviation) consisted in carrying out the necessary examinations to obtain aeronautical titles, licenses and qualifications, also having as its objective the training of civil pilots at its facilities in Salamanca.
After its constitution, it was proceeded by means of a public deed of February 15, 1991 to endow it with the legal form of a public limited company. The statute of operation and organization of the company was thus granted.
Very shortly thereafter, by Royal Decree 990/1992, of July 31, SENASA assumed the powers of the now defunct Training Center and the DGAC's Gliding Schools. Thus began his long career in the training of air traffic controllers, which continues to this day.
In 2001, SENASA acquired the status of designated entity and technical service for the General State Administration and its public law bodies and entities. Thus, it began to work as a fundamental entity in providing the technical and human support necessary for the regulation and supervision tasks carried out by the Public Administrations in the aviation sector.
Finally, its current legal form and name, Servicios y Estudios para la Navegación Aérea y la Seguridad Aeronáutica, S.M.E. M.P. S.A. (SENASA), were adopted on March 30, 2017, in accordance with Law 40/2015, of October 1, on the Legal Regime of the Public Sector.
SENASA operates as well as a state commercial company of those provided for in article 166.2 of Law 33/2003, of November 3, on Public Administration Assets, functionally attached to the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda and fully owned by the State through the General Directorate of State Heritage.
