PRACTICAL RISK ASSESSMENT FOR UAS OPERATION (SORA METHODOLOGY)

Course objective

The objective of the course is for the student to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to develop an adequate risk assessment for the operation of UAS in a specific category through an operational authorization. The student will become familiar with risk assessments for the operation of UAS through the SORA (Specific Operations Risk Assessment) methodology, applying it to different most frequent real use cases.

Application regulations

  • Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/945, of March 12, 2019, on unmanned aircraft systems and third-country operators of unmanned aircraft systems.
  • Execution Regulation (EU) 2019/947 of the Commission, of May 24, 2019, regarding the rules and procedures applicable to the use of unmanned aircraft.
  • JARUS Guidelines on Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) + Annexes thereto

Course program

  • Introduction
  • Practical Case A:
    • Definition - ConOps
    • Classification
    • Application of the SORA Methodology: GRC Determination (Ground risk mitigations), ARC Determination (Airborne risk mitigations: strategic and tactical), OSOS Operational Security Objectives and Containment and determination of the Adjacent Area
    • Required documentation (Operations Manual, Training, Maintenance, Characterization of the aircraft and equipment requirements, etc.). Specifics.
  • Practical Case B:
  • Case Study of Cross-Border Operations

The course will be based fundamentally on carrying out real practical cases, proposed by the instructor, which reflect the different aspects of the authorization processes.

Previous requirements

For a correct follow-up of the course, the student must have prior knowledge of both the regulations applicable to the operation of UAS and the theory of the SORA methodology in its current version.

Additionally, the student must have the previous knowledge that allows them to be able to classify the type of operation within the specific category (STS/PDRA/Authorization/LUC), and know the necessary requirements to obtain an operational authorization within the framework of the Regulation. (UE) 2019/947 of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), as well as developing the associated documentation.
